Everyone has a view on what they think Abortion is but there’s one thing people seem to lack: Educational Background. You have seen it on the media; people talking negative on abortions and saying it is bad for women, that will make them feel guilty. Other deceptive information regarding abortion includes that it causes breast cancer, psychological problems, and infertility.

How crazy is that? This fear-mongering leads many people to believe the procedure is extremely risky, when in fact studies confirm that legal abortions are safer than common medical procedures such as wisdom tooth extraction. It is the widespread ignorance that has allowed anti-abortion legislation like Texas law HB-2 to pass. The HB-2 law requires abortion clinics to adhere to standards of ambulatory surgical centers which can cost clinics millions of dollars in renovations. According to The New York Times, half of Texas’ abortion clinics have closed since 2013 because of the law. But as the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists pointed out when HB-2 was proposed, there is absolutely no reason except to prevent clinics from functioning to enforce these sort of requirements.

Many people do not know that Abortion is one of the most common and safest medical procedures provided in the United States today. Approximately 1.3 million women have an abortion per year, and 90% are in the first trimester of pregnancy. Less than 1% of abortions result in serious complications. Abortion is about 10 times safer than childbirth.

Dr. Rachael Phelps, a doctor who also provides abortion services, provided a good point on why people provide inaccurate information about abortion: “Education. Because we do not talk about it abortion, there is this mystery about it.” She also adds that she’s worked with physician residents who are still unfamiliar with the specifics of abortion.

Organizations such as American Women’s Services and Associates in OB/GYN Care make sure to provide top notch information to their patients and successful procedures.
