{"id":19,"date":"2016-04-22T14:08:16","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T14:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.americanwomensservices.com\/blog\/?p=19"},"modified":"2025-12-29T01:18:05","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T06:18:05","slug":"media-hypes-up-birth-control-glaucoma-link","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.americanwomensservices.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/media-hypes-up-birth-control-glaucoma-link\/","title":{"rendered":"Media Hypes Up Birth Control-Glaucoma Link"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Birth control pills come with the risk of a lot of side effects, like weight gain, acne, headaches, and even an increased risk of blood clots.\u00a0 But, contrary to the many headlines which appeared on major news networks this week, blindness is NOT a side effect of birth control.<\/p>\n<p>The reason behind the outrageous claim is a new study by the University of California, San Francisco.\u00a0 The study assessed information from 3,406 women aged 40 years and up.\u00a0 The women had all taken part in the 2005 to 2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey which required them to fill out a survey and have an eye exam.<\/p>\n<p>Out of all the women, 231 of them had glaucoma.\u00a0 Of these women, 2.3% had never used birth control, 1.3% had used birth control for less than 3 years, and 1.4% had used birth control for 3+ years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 By comparison, out of the 3,175 women who did not have glaucoma, 29..6% had never used birth control, 28.8% had used birth control for less than 3 years, and 36.5% had used birth control for 3+ years.<\/p>\n<p>Based on this information and adjusting for other factors, the researchers concluded that women who used birth control have a 2.05 times higher risk of glaucoma.<\/p>\n<p>The mainstream media took this information and ran with it.\u00a0 Some of the headlines read:<\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><i>Prolonged Use of Birth Control Pill Linked to Glaucoma \u2013 TIME blog<\/i><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\">\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><i>BREAKING: The Pill Linked to Glaucoma Risk \u2013 Prevention <\/i><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\">\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><i>Birth Control Could Make You Go Blind \u2013 The Atlantic Wire <\/i><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\">\n<p align=\"CENTER\">\n<p>If these fear-invoking headlines weren\u2019t bad enough, most of the news outlets didn\u2019t even bother to get into details about the study \u2013 and it is those details which would have assuaged women\u2019s fears.\u00a0 Few of the news articles, for example, bothered to mention that the \u201crisk\u201d found by the researchers is only an association.\u00a0 They overwhelmingly also fail to mention the other risk factors found in the study, such as that African Americans have a 3.36 times increased risk of glaucoma.\u00a0\u00a0 Not one news outlet wrote a headline along the lines of \u201cAfrican American Women 3 Times More Likely to Go Blind!\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0Why would they write that when they can focus on the controversial topic of birth control instead?<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewire.com\/technology\/2013\/11\/birth-control-linked-glaucoma\/71722\/\">The Wired<\/a> points out, this study (which should be considered preliminary because it has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal) is \u201cGood news for the anti-birth control movement\u2026There&#8217;s a lot of fake science swirling around about the risks associated with oral contraceptives, the most common assertion being that birth control causes breast cancer.
