STD and HIV Testing

Testing and treatment for STDs and HIV is an important part of reproductive healthcare. We advise our patients to be screened for sexually transmitted infections and diseases at least yearly as part of their annual gynecological care. We provide treatment for most STDs and referrals for more serious conditions.

American Women's Services' Pennsylvania offices are proud to participate in the PA Department of Health STD/HIV screening and treatment program. In collaboration with the Department of Health, we provide free STD and HIV education, screening and treatment.

American Women's Services' STD/HIV testing program is sponsored and regulated by the PA Department of Health. The mission of this state program is to improve the quality of life and educate the people within the community on how to protect themselves and prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

The program screens for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and an optional HIV screening. These tests are available for both men and women. The tests used for women are Gen-probe and a blood sample. A pap smear is also recommended if you have not had one in the past year. Men are screened through blood and urine samples (no urethral swabs.) We can also screen for other reproductive tract infections, such as Trichomoniasis, Bacterial Vaginosis, and Candidiasis, and identify Herpes and Genital Warts, if you are currently experiencing symptoms. Along with your free screening, state-certified counselors will speak with you about the ways you can protect yourself and reduce your risk of contracting or spreading HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Two weeks after your testing, you will return to our office to receive your results and any follow-up care or counseling. Results will not be provided over the phone. In the event of a positive result, treatment will be provided free of charge at our office. Patients who have a reactive (positive) HIV result will be referred back to the PA Department of Health for further testing and treatment.

Testing through this program is free and confidential. It is available to both men and women of any age. Participants will be offered information about and prescriptions for contraception, free hepatitis vaccinations and free male and female condoms.

All other offices provide STD screening by request. Though we strive to keep fees minimal for testing services, we are unable to provide free testing in New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. We are working to expand our free testing program to these locations through other funding sources and hope to offer free services soon.
